1990s: The extravagance of the 80s was almost entirely washed away when the stock market crashed towards the end of that decade. Early 90s styling was toned down in accordance with economic change. Black layered upon black became the staple whilst the youth embraced a more disheveled look, using cast-offs along with matted hair to emphasis their disenchantment with the recessionary period. The 80s power suit gave way to the girlie dress in the mid 90s which referenced the 30s bias cut and the 50s nylon slip to open the gates to a new era of vintage acceptability towards the end of the decade. The emergence of the deconstructed garment during this time is perhaps one of the more important fashion developments - it was fresh, innovative and above all gave way to an intelligence in fashion that had not been seen for decades.
