Conceptual designer, Junya Watanabe takes a bog-standard tweed skirt and reinvents its form by disconnecting with traditional construction.
Detail: Vintage concept tweed skirt by Junya Watanabe from his 1999 AW collection for Comme des Garcons. Extraordinary construction / deconstruction, and use of a contrasting brown and fawn coloured herringbone tweed. The avant-garde L-shaped form has been designed as a body conscious long fitted pencil skirt. An extended flap, with the use of two giant poppers, can be sculpted to create several different silhouettes. Black rolled satin silk is used to accentuate side seams. Zip fastening, hook and eye positioned along waist-line to the right of the extended flap. Zipped pocket to extended flap. Fully lined. Intricate and clever construction. Rare and very collectable.
Junya Watanabe began his career as a pattern-maker and designer working alongside his mentor Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garcons. He quickly established himself as a talent who pushed the boundaries in conceptual art-fashion; using new techniques in pattern manipulation and innovative use of synthetic materials. Launching his own label in 1992, Junya Watanabe caused a sensation in 1993 when presenting his first collection in Paris. Today, his early works are highly collectable.
