Women of the 1920s wanted to appear like an androgynous school boy, flat chested and hipless; and yet, she also wanted freedom and independence. Such factors forced enormous change in fashion over the course of the decade. The result was radical. Styles moved from that of elaborate detail, high waists and ankle length skirts, to simple, shapeless tubes with hip-level waist lines and much shorter knee length hems.
