Conceptual designer, Junya Watanabe takes a classic crew-neck sweater and reinvents its form by disconnecting with traditional construction.
Detail: Vintage Junya Watanabe burnt purple mohair crew-neck sweater from his 1994 AW collection for Comme des Garcons. The best way to describe this pieces, is by referring to the sweater as a long scarf with sleeves at either end. The neck hole is positioned off centre, closest to the right-hand sleeve. The extended back width allows for several different styling options. Refer to images. The mohair is short haired, super soft and non-itchy. Unlined. Rare and very collectable.
Junya Watanabe began his career as a pattern-maker and designer working alongside his mentor Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garcons. He quickly established himself as a talent who pushed the boundaries in conceptual art-fashion; using new techniques in pattern manipulation and innovative use of synthetic materials. Launching his own label in 1992, Junya Watanabe caused a sensation in 1993 when presenting his first collection in Paris. Today, his early works are highly collectable.
