1930s: Economic depression gave way to a longer, leaner and more figure-hugging silhouette which defined the waist, accentuated the shoulders and narrowed the hips. A style emerged that was understated and sophisticated. Suits became fashionable by the mid 30s with square, crisply tailored structures and tiny waists.
