Vintage Issey Miyake Hand Woven 'rideau de théâtre' Coat - Early 1980s

Detail: Vintage Issey Miyake early 1980s 'Theatre Curtain' coat, intricately constructed from black and cream hand woven wool that emulates the Japanese technique of shibori dyeing. Featuring a shawl collar that extends to form gathered pockets on either side. Leather cord runs through the waist of the coat and pockets. Tighten the leather cord to sculpt the shape of the front silhouette; reminiscent of threatre curtains. Single button fastening. The coat is three quarter lined in black wool to the main body. The sleeves are fully lined in thick satin. Exquisite condition for its age! Rare and very collectable.

Issey Miyake and his design team have been experimenting with and refining their pleating technique since 1988. The groundbreaking method - by which pleats are applied after the fabric is cut and sewn - is a revolutionary departure from traditional process.
