Detail: Vintage Junya Watanabe tartan skirt from his 1996 AW collection for Comme des Garcons. Two contrasting lightweight tartan fabric panels are used to reform a classic long tube skirt. Fabric panels overlap, with excess fabric forming an asymmetrical detail with beautifully tailored slits that expose the contrasting tartan beneath. Zip fastening. Fabric panels are attached to one side seam thus, allowing for greater leg mobility. Unlined. Intricate and clever construction. Rare and very collectable.

Junya Watanabe began his career as a pattern-maker and designer working alongside his mentor Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garcons. He quickly established himself as a talent who pushed the boundaries in conceptual art-fashion; using new techniques in pattern manipulation and innovative use of synthetic materials. Launching his own label in 1992, Junya Watanabe caused a sensation in 1993 when presenting his first collection in Paris. Today, his early works are highly collectable.
